The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, revealed that he will independently develop this new product as part of an individual collection showcasing issues the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company

The recent announcement deepens the continuing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders have asserted that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has become a symbol for support for Palestinians due to its colors, which mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Current Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which was first created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions

Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.

This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

At that time, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
