British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
