British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
