Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in defense or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution are not only from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that violate the law or our national charter."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The video message appeared to provoke a heated response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership released a combined announcement denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our nation with great national pride and distinction. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme digital publications and recant his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Lawmakers' Strong Response
The officials who participated in the video also published a response.
"We identify as veterans and security experts who love this United States and swore an vow to safeguard and defend the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The significant point is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must join forces and censure the ex-president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Governmental Reactions
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The GOP leader supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of Congress telling troops to defy commands, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and decide all that."
White House Response
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who conspired to organize a video message to members of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can cause casualties, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically promoting."
