Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new acronym surfaced several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by health professionals including paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are continuing. Authorities disputes these allegations, just as it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is completely different.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
