New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD issued security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
