The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction

One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.

“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a superior concept. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
