The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
