A comprehensive search and rescue effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean region for a duo of unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to Havana.

Military Rescue Operations Launched

Mexico has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying at least 9 sailors, as stated by a official statement.

The boats had been expected to reach Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island grapples with repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with suitable safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"Our team is working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and officially received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the country.

That vessel, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought solar panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Larger Geopolitical Context

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k operations cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified lately, with remarks from various officials highlighting the complex state of relations.

Responding to recent proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to locate the vessels and secure the security of the crews.

To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
