What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
