Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the option to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
